Briggs and Stratton Announces Tell Us Your Story Winner

Customers shared their memories as the company celebrates its 100th anniversary

MILWAUKEE, Sept. 3, 2008 – Tim Ingram of Louisville, Ky., has won the Briggs & Stratton’s “Tell Us Your Story” contest. Ingram shared his collection of Briggs and Stratton memories: learning from his father how engines work, mowing lawns for his first job and later sharing his knowledge about engines and lawn care with his own children.

Chosen from more than 800 submissions, Ingram is the winner of the Ultimate Garage Package, valued at $6,500. It includes a lawnmower, trimmer, generator, leaf blower, lawn tractor, rear-tine tiller and other Briggs & Stratton products.

“The year was 1964 or 1965. One of the neighbors set an old lawnmower out with the trash,” Ingram noted in his contest entry. With the neighbor’s permission, he worked with his father to try to fix it and got the mower to work again. “It was the proudest day of my life as I knocked on doors asking neighbors if I could cut the grass for $3,” he wrote. “I learned a lot about engines that day and a lot about my dad. Last summer I started teaching my kids about the lawn mower and guess what? It’s a Briggs & Stratton.”

As part of the company’s centennial celebration, Briggs & Stratton solicited personal essays from customers that showcased “The Power Within,” a phrase that sums up the company’s core values. Those values include a can-do spirit, the satisfying feeling of a job well done and an insatiable desire to pass on knowledge to the next generation.

Customers’ stories ranged from an engine enthusiast who used a Briggs & Stratton lawn mower engine to power a custom-built locomotive, to parents who named their three children Briggs, Anne and Stratton.

“Ingram’s essay stood out as a direct reflection of our core values,” said John Shiely, chairman, president and CEO of Briggs & Stratton. “We are proud of the impact our products have had on our customers.”

“I am thrilled to be the winner of the essay contest. Happy anniversary, Briggs & Stratton. My family will be using your products for years to come,” said Ingram.
